Ex-Guantanamo detainee charged in native Algeria

ALGIERS, Algeria – A former Guantanamo detainee who was transferred to his native Algeria earlier this month has been indicted, the Algiers prosecutor's office said Monday.

Aziz Abdul Naji was also placed under judicial supervision Sunday, the office said in a statement, though it did not say what he had been charged with or what the supervision entailed.

UK set to pay compensation over house arrest plan

LONDON – Alleged Terrorism suspects held under a house arrest-style program but never put on trial are likely to win compensation payments, Britain's government said Wednesday after losing a legal case.

The Court of Appeal rejected a government appeal to overturn an earlier High Court ruling that the program breached human rights law.

Mayor: NYC to fight ruling on 9/11 memorial names

NEW YORK – New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg says the city will contest a court order to list a retired fire captain alongside active-duty colleagues on the Sept. 11 memorial.

Bloomberg said Tuesday the city "will fight this in court." He says the Fire Department of New York made a reasonable choice to list only active-duty firefighters in an FDNY section on the memorial.

France declares war against al-Qaida

PARIS – France has declared war on al-Qaida, and matched its fighting words with a first attack on a base camp of the terror network's North African branch, after the terror network killed a French aid worker it took hostage in April.

The declaration and attack marked a shift in strategy for France, usually discrete about its behind-the-scenes battle against Terrorism.
